And the Hurt-Sentiment Syndrome has struck again!

On Wednesday, a PIL was filed in the Gujarat High Court against developers of the location-based augmented reality game Pokémon Go, alleging it hurts religious sentiments of certain communities by showing eggs in places of worship.

The petitioner — Alay Anil Dave — has said eggs are considered as non-vegetarian food, and it is blasphemous to carry non-vegetarian food inside a place of worship of Hindus and Jains.

This makes one wonder what must have gone through Mr. Dave's mind before filing that petition. Did the Gods get offended by the presence of a virtual egg in the temple? Maybe they conveyed their displeasure ONLY to him telepathically and he decided to act on it.

A man acting upon instructions given by voices in his head....... sounds very similar to symptoms of a particular illness, doesn't it?

How does this PIL affect Pokemon Go?

It does not. At all.

The creator of Pokemon Go- John Hanke, must be laughing at the sheer foolishness of the PIL, while he reads the news about his game.

If we approach the matter logically, the terms and conditions of the game clearly state that the onus is on the user to use his discretion to not hurt the sentiments of the society.

"By way of example, and not as a limitation, you agree that when using the Services and Content, you will not:

  • defame, abuse, harass, harm, stalk, threaten, or otherwise violate the legal rights (including the rights of privacy and publicity) of others;
  • upload, post, email, transmit, or otherwise make available any unlawful, inappropriate, defamatory, obscene, pornographic, vulgar, offensive, fraudulent, false, misleading, or deceptive Content or message;
  • promote or engage in discrimination, bigotry, racism, hatred, or harassment against any individual or group"

This can only have one outcome- Niantic goes unaffected, and the petitioner is left morally unsatisfied.

The larger issue of religious sentiments in India

Canon, some time earlier, made a claim saying that their new CMOS sensor was the most sensitive element. But if you live in India, you know that is in no way true. The most sensitive thing is- religious sentiment. Everything else ranks lower than that in order of sensitivity.

Weirdly enough, the causes of almost all of these hurt religious sentiments are trivial, banal, and downright stupid.

There are so many larger issues plaguing our nation today- poverty, malnutrition, crimes against women, corruption, economic reform. Hell, you even have your own job to do! And don't forget your family which needs your time too. In spite of all of this,

Itna time laate kahan se ho bhai?

It is a wonder how many Indians find time in their daily schedule to get offended, consult a lawyer willing to entertain their stupidity, and then go through the entire process of filing a PIL.

Even half of that precious time invested in other things like- work, spending time with family, wooing that girl you dig, reading a book you like, or even just listening to music, will make India so much more of a happier country. Maybe it will also improve the nation's AND your religion's name on the global stage.

If you have frustration and issues you need to talk about, Mr. Petitioner, you can always consult that shrink.

Meanwhile, in other news, representatives of Niantic Inc., and Nintendo Co., the companies that created and distribute the game, have kept mum and SURPRISE- not given any amount of fish.
